Zettie was born on a Saturday and Nan Quillen of Neon KY delivered her.
Marriage:
Zettie Walker "Tudy" Johnson married Andrew J. “Andy” Bates
Son of Joseph “Joe” & Margaret Alice “Mary Alice” “Babe” (Vanover) Bates.
Daughter of Caleb B. “K” and Angeline “Pemmie” (Hall) Johnson.
Zettie was 15 years old
Andy was 20 years old.
They were married by Sherman Gibson in 1919 at her mother’s home at noon.

Joined Thornton Church of Old Union Association, Old Regular Baptists, Mayking KY and was
baptized by Bennett Adams on 17 Apr 1932.
First preaching was 1st Saturday September 1939 at a call meeting in the Old Storehouse at
Thornton KY.
Ordained preacher the 3rd Saturday, note didn’t state month, in 1939 at Mayking KY.

Mayking church left the Old Union Association and formed it’s own Association.
Andy & Zettie wanted to remain with their original Association of the Old Regular Baptist, so they
changed to the Thornton Gap church.
Land ownership:
Bought land that Joe Bates’ (Andy’s father) store was located on Beaver Creek (Knott Co KY).
Later sold that land to purchase property on Mill Branch in Letcher County KY.
Education:
Zettie was not afforded an education.
She started school but it was extremely short lived as she was needed at home to help with siblings.
If she had been given glasses as a child or young adult –she might have been able to read.
She was able to do some basic reading as her younger children progressed through school and some
graduated high school.
Andy attended school through the 8th grade at Bill D Branch schoolhouse near Kite, Knott Co KY.

Zettie had intended on her named Wanita, but Doc Pigman sent in Norma Jean on paperwork.
Tudy later noted there were many “Norma Jean” babies born in the area for a while.
